Why do professionals choose oak hardwood flooring?

Oak parquet remains a key player—not only for aesthetic reasons, but above all for its technical performance and workability. At Kerkhofs Parket We’ve noticed that parquet installers and interior designers continue to deliberately choose oak, and that’s certainly no coincidence.

Stability and Workability

Oak is known for its favorable balance of hardness and elasticity. It is less prone to warping than many exotic woods and is very easy to work with.

For you as a parquet installer, this means:

  • Lower risk of cracking
  • Works well with radiant floor heating (when installed correctly)
  • Reliable bonding
  • Efficient processing on the job site

European Oak vs. American Oak

At Kerkhofs Parket, we primarily work with European oak—up to 99% of our oak—and only occasionally with American oak. Below are the key characteristics of both varieties.

European oak is known for its warm, natural appearance, with a subtle grain and a variety of (light) colors that age beautifully. The wood is relatively easy to work with and absorbs treatments such as oil or varnish very well, making it particularly suitable for a variety of finishes.

American oak, on the other hand, typically has a coarser, more pronounced grain and a slightly cooler, rosy undertone. It is often slightly harder and denser in structure, which makes it less absorbent when finished, but gives it a robust and distinctive look.

Both types of wood are durable and strong, but European oak is a slightly better fit for both classic and modern interior styles thanks to its versatility and aesthetic appeal.

Finishing Options

Oak offers exceptional flexibility in terms of finish:

  • Smoking
  • Brushing
  • Aging
  • Oils or varnishes in a variety of shades

This allows you, as a parquet installer, to perfectly adapt to architectural trends without having to switch wood species.

Availability and Value for the Money

In addition to technical advantages, availability is also crucial. Oak is consistently available within Europe, ensuring stable delivery times and competitive prices compared to exotic alternatives.

For project-based purchases, this remains a decisive factor.
